Heat may spark world food crisis
Half the world's population could face a climate-induced food crisis by 2100, a new report by US scientists warns.
Rapid warming is likely to reduce crop yields in the tropics and subtropics, according to Prof David Battisti of the University of Washington, Seattle. The most extreme summers of the last century will become the norm, he calculates, using 23 climate models. We must urgently create crops tolerant to heat and drought if we are to adapt in time, he writes in Science journal. We're taking the worst of what we've seen historically and saying that in the future it is going to be a lot worse, unless there is some kind of adaptation Prof Rosamond Naylor, Stanford University "The stresses on global food production from temperature alone are going to be huge," said Mr Battisti, a professor of atmospheric sciences. EU deal on new pesticide controls
The EU is moving towards stricter controls on pesticides after European Parliament negotiators reached a deal with the 27 EU member states. The legislation will ban 22 chemicals that can trigger cancer or cause neural, hormonal or genetic damage.
The full parliament is expected to vote on the package in January, then it goes to EU leaders for final approval. Crop scientists and pesticide firms say the controls may create new pest resistance problems and reduce yields. Read more... The new guide to boiler insurance is ready! Take a look...

G-Wiz sales slump by more than half
Jonathan Ross, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Jade Jagger all proudly own one. Even the Lloyds TSB chairman Victor Blank was snapped stepping out of one on his way to a meeting to discuss the takeover of HBOS. They may look like Noddy cars, but for the green-conscious urban motorist, the G-Wiz was the guilt-free answer to getting around town.
But all that star power hasn't insulated them from a drastic slump in sales: according to figures collated by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, a total of just 156 electric cars were sold in the UK from January to October 2008, compared with 374 for the same period last year. The vast majority of the sales (and the 58% slump) are G-Wiz cars, made by Indian car company Reva. Experts think the fall comes from a combination of factors, including the recent financial gloom, concerns about the safety of Reva's vehicle and the distant promise of electric cars from mainstream manufacturers. Amazon deforestation accelerates
The destruction of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil has accelerated for the first time in four years, Brazilian officials say.
Satellite images show 11,968 sq km of land was cleared in the year to July, nearly 4% higher than the year before. The government said the figure was unsatisfactory but could have been a lot worse if it had not taken action against illegal logging. High commodity prices had allegedly tempted farmers to clear more land. Read more... For more green news take a look at GoEcoGo.
